Why you're seeing this message
Between mid-May and mid-August 2025, a bug in Tailscale's coordination server created duplicate accounts for a few hundred users. In some cases, the bug also created a duplicate tailnet, which made the tailnet look reset or made devices disappear.
When you log in to Tailscale, we use data from your identity provider such as Apple, Google, or Microsoft, to locate your Tailscale account and the tailnets you can access. The bug blocked us from finding the correct account for a few hundred users, so the system treated them as new. That process created a new account and, in some cases, a new tailnet. New devices joined the duplicate tailnet, while existing devices stayed in the original one.
We fixed the bug, but affected users still hold multiple accounts, often with devices tied to each. We left those accounts unchanged until we can work with customers directly to avoid data loss.
What to do
If you encounter this bug, the notification displays when you log in to Tailscale. You might also notice missing devices in your tailnet or settings that look reset. Contact Tailscale Support and our team will help resolve the issue.
Is this a security concern?
No. The bug only created duplicate accounts and tailnets. Only authenticated users could access the duplicates. No one gained access to tailnets outside their own, and no unauthorized access occurred between duplicate tailnets.
