Tailscale’s visual policy editor, released in beta earlier this year, is now generally available. It provides a tabular, graphical representation of your Tailscale network (tailnet) policy file, while still working perfectly alongside our traditional JSON-based text file.
The visual policy editor provides flexibility for anyone who needs to control which users have access to which nodes and machines. From Tailscale’s web admin console, you can add, edit, and delete policy entries using buttons, live previews, and auto-completing search.
The HuJSON (JSON for Humans) text file can still be edited using a live toggle switch at the top of the page, or via Terraform, or our REST API. It's just easier now for people working in different environments—IT, development, and security, for example—to control access to a tailnet.
Chris Foster, VP of Technology at DEEL Media, participated in the product’s alpha program and described its impact:
Tailscale’s visual editor drastically improved how our team of non-technical users could assess network access. Instead of requiring devs to explain the JSON configs, they could easily identify and manage permissions through a clean GUI—saving them and the devs valuable time. Basically, zero learning curve for our non-technical users. It's a valuable addition to the ever-enhancing Tailscale offering.
The visual policy editor is available for all Tailscale plans and users, including our free tier.
