KABAM Robotics creates robot solutions for security, facility management, and hospitality, and Tailscale has become the backbone of their production infrastructure.
Jakub Tomášek, Engineering Director, joins us to share how Tailscale helped them build a dependable security and networking layer for their operations, for reliable access, low-latency connectivity, and top-level security.
High-latency and endless headaches
KABAM operates in the security sector, so security and compliance are particularly important to its customers. Unfortunately, the VPN solutions their teams initially tried were limited by high overhead, central bottlenecks, and high latency.
Jakub shares, “This was a major issue for mobile robots deployed over 4G, 5G, or satellite networks with constrained or variable signal strength.”
These issues also slowed the workflows of engineers providing intensive, Level 3 support to devices that depend on stable, low-latency access. This slowed productivity and made maintenance needlessly taxing.
“The reliability issues made remote debugging and maintenance difficult for our engineers, who provide Level 3 customer support,” Jakub explains.
Building on a secure platform
To resolve these issues, KABAM’s engineers adopted Tailscale. Its peer-to-peer mesh architecture creates direct, encrypted connections that perform even in low-bandwidth or high-latency conditions often encountered by KABAM’s robots.
“Our engineers started using Tailscale to work around those reliability problems,” explains Jakub. “The peer-to-peer connectivity model, combined with easy setup and a zero-trust architecture, made an immediate difference.”
These improvements led to Tailscale's widespread adoption at KABAM, and it quickly became integral to their networking. “It became a natural decision to extend it across our entire fleet,” elaborates Jakub. “What started as a tool for reliable remote SSH access by our engineers has since become a key part of our infrastructure.”
Adopting Tailscale was particularly impactful because KABAM’s robots are powered by their Smart+ Robot Middleware Framework, and adding Tailscale as a secure network layer provided reliable cloud–edge orchestration, remote robot operation, fleet management, and integration with building systems and AI applications.
“Tailscale now ships with every robot out of the factory and has become an integral part of the Smart+ ecosystem. It’s the backbone, enabling secure, peer-to-peer connectivity across our robots, cloud infrastructure, and customer integrations.”
Seamless systems
Besides the low-latency connectivity that inspired KABAM’s initial search for a networking solution, Tailscale also gave its engineers reliable terminal access to their robots in the field.
This facilitates crucial maintenance and updates, such as remote software updates and Ansible deployments. It also supports development by providing secure access for KABAM’s globally distributed engineering team.
Jakub shares, “A large portion of our developers work remotely, and Tailscale makes collaborating on live systems seamless.”
Secure access
Another way that Tailscale supports KABAM’s operations is by providing secure access. “It allows us to enforce access controls and compliance in our AWS environments, restricting developer access to production Kubernetes clusters and databases,” Jakub explains.
It also helps KABAM stay compliant, which is particularly important in the security sector. SOC2 certification is critical in their field, and Tailscale’s peer-to-peer architecture helped them meet its rigorous requirements.
As Jakub shares, “Tailscale’s zero-trust, peer-to-peer architecture helped us achieve SOC2 and ISO 27001 certification, which are critical for our enterprise and government customers.”
A smart solution
For on-prem deployments, Tailscale has allowed KABAM to meet the rigorous data privacy and residency requirements of key clients, like those in Saudi Arabia.
As Jakub explains, “Tailscale allows us to support clients with strict data privacy and residency requirements, including secure camera integrations with VMS and BMS systems. Tailscale supports seamless and secure RTSP stream sharing for integration with third-party VMS or cloud AI analytics systems.”
Tailscale is also the secure network layer of KABAM's Smart+ Link, a unified API that supports the development of third-party robotics applications. Its integration creates reliable connections between developers’ robots, customer systems, and AI applications, both in the cloud and on-prem.
Jakub shares, “Together, Tailscale and Smart+ have enabled us to scale our deployments across four continents in a remarkably short time.”
